How to Reflect & Refocus on Your Personal Goals
I came across a Tiktok the other day that said "in 2 months, 2019 will be 3 years ago". This hit a little harder than I thought.
With 2023 just around the corner, this is the time many of us begin to look back at the year to mark our achievements. I will share how I reflect and refocus on my goals to double down before the end of the year.
REFLECTING
What to Reflect on? | Categories & Structure
I reflect on my life by splitting it up into 5 areas of focus or "categories". This is important for me to do because it adds a sense of structure of areas in my life I want to improve on or set goals for.
Personal Finance Goals
YouTube & Creator Goals
Health & Fitness Goals
Travel & Fun Goals
Personal Relationships Goals
Personal Finance - Is something that is not taught in schools and it takes a while to understand. But it is so important and it personally has help me feel like I am in control of my own life.
YouTube & Creative - goals in photography and dance keeps my life for me feel fun and entertaining
Health & Fitness - Your health is so important to keep myself feeling good and healthy because whats the point of trying to work and become wealthy if I am not even healthy enough to enjoy it?
Travel & Fun - Traveling has been so fun for me. As you can see in my chicago and ny videos, its been great to see the world as most of my days are spent on a computer.
Personal Relationships - this is mentioned last, but the highest on my priority list because the true measurement of life is about the meaningful relationships that you build.
How to Reflect? | Metrics & Measurements
For each area, chose a way to measure each area so that there is a way to track progress.
Personal Finance (Metrics)
Amount in Savings
Amount in Investments
Amount of Debt
Total Net Worth Calculations
YouTube & Creative (Metrics)
Number of Videos produced
Number of Subscribers
Health & Fitness (Metrics)
Body Weight
Bench Press Number
Squat Number
etc
Travel & Fun (Metrics)
Number of Planned Outings
City Bucket List
Personal Relationships (Metrics)
Not really a measurement, but rating myself on if I am spending enough time with family, friends, and partner.
Why Reflect? | Tracking Progress
At work, we do our jobs to work hard to make sure our company is successful. However, I think it is just important to invest in ourselves and build our personal lives as well.
Reflecting gives a chance to pause and look at the progress we are making. When we set goals, without reflecting on them at a frequent basis, we can get lost in the time of life and then by the time you know it, a whole year has gone by.
Setting goals gives your direction. Reflecting analyzes if you are going the right direction. Refocusing helps you ensure you continue the direction or change complete.
Reflecting can take a while and also may make you feel happier or more stress. A constant reminder to focus on the progress, not the result. If you are, keep going. If not, refocus.
REFOCUS
What is Refocusing? | Taking a Step Back
I get distracted often. It happens a lot, and I see it happen as well. Refocusing is to pause in the moment, and really say what’s happening.
What is working and what is not working?
For example, let’s say you are on a roll with working out, but then you go on vacation for a week, come back and have tons of work to catch up on. Next thing you know, 2 or 3 weeks go by and you haven't worked out. Life happens, things come ups.
Refocusing is the art of realizing what's happening and realigning yourself.
How to Refocus? | To Change or Not Change
I can do two things:
1) Do Nothing - If things are progressing slowly, just keep going.
2) Make a Change - If things are not going the way you expected, you can make changes.
Change up the routine
Try out a new strategy
Get creative on how you can get back on track.
Why Refocus? | Back on Track
Things never go according to plan. It is important to set a bi-weekly or monthly "check" to make sure that you are on track.
This is a form of discipline. Think about going to the gym, it takes so much time to see results of your efforts and progress. Skipping the gym one day, turns into weeks, and then into months. Refocusing is to keep yourself in check.
Conclusion
There are many different ways to continue pushing towards your goals. With two months left of 2022. I hope this article motivates you to look at your goals and make one last final refocus to push you towards the end.
